Canadian abortion statistics greatly underestimated

An Ontario study (POWER - Project for an Ontario Women’s Health Evidence-Based Report) has just been released which shows the gruesome statistic that for every 100 babies born in Ontario, 37 are aborted. The ratio for teen girls is even more shocking. For every 100 babies born to Ontario teens 15 and over, 152 are aborted. (Nat. Post, March 2, 2011). And as many as 52% of women have had more than one abortion. Continuing the shock, about 20% of teens 15-19 had already had at least one abortion.
These statistics are only for those who have had abortions in a hospital. Abortion clinics were not part of the statistics gathering, although they perform more than half of the provinces abortion. Since teens do not need parental consent for clinic abortions (although they may for a hospital abortion), more teens may go to an abortion clinic.
According to a 2010 Angus Reid poll, 89% of Canadians do not even know that Canada has no legal restrictions on abortion. Further, an abortion can be performed at any point during the pregnancy, and taxpayers have to cover almost all the costs.
Why do Canadians know so little about the abortion trade in Canada, even though anywhere from 60% to 66% support at least some legal restrictions on abortion? Some provinces don’t report abortion data to Statistics Canada, so the official statistics are sketchy at best. Some health care facilities present such flimsy data that it renders the data meaningless. And the province of British Columbia has “a law that prohibits citizens from accessing any statistics about abortions performed there” (ibid).
The Canadian Institute for Health Information, currently responsible for abortion statistics, reports that in 2007 there were 32,351 abortions in Ontario. But using POWER’s report, Life Canada calculates that there were 51,060 abortion in Ontario in 2007.
Abortion statistics are extremely important and should be available to all Canadians. If there is nothing to hide, why all the secrecy?
It is safe to say that since 1969 Canadian abortionists have killed well over four million babies.
Prime Minster Harper, running for re-election in his Calgary riding, has repeated once more, this time in Welland, ON, that the will not touch the abortion and same-sex marriage issues. Help elect or re-elect pro-life MPs and after the election encourage them to break away from the ugly Harper tyranny (National Post, April 5, 2011).
