Canadian Euthanasia Bill Put on Hold

Debate in Parliament on the bill to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide has been delayed by the Prime Minister’s decision to prorogue Parliament. Second reading and a vote on the bill, previously scheduled for February are now likely to occur in mid to late March, according to Alex Schadenberg, executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition.

Although all government bills and committee work ceased with prorogation, Private Members’ bills remained on the Order Paper. Bill C-384 was introduced by Bloc MP Francine Lalonde.

The delay does not mean the issue of euthanasia and assisted suicide will fade from public view. According to Alex, MP Lalonde has delayed the bill several times because, in his opinion, she doubts it will pass. However, this action also keeps the debate alive.
